Amber Light Choices is an alternative (for lack of a better word) rock band from Johannesburg, South Africa consisting of Beer Le Roux (drums and percussion), Piet Dempsey (bass guitar), Victor Bucarizza (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), and Aleks Bulović (lead guitar and backup vocals).
Formed in the August of 2013 by Aleks, Victor and former drummer Mike Drew, the trio auditioned a series of bassists until they met Geoffrey Hobson in March 2014. In February 2015, with the The Farewell Geoffrey Tour, the band amicably parted ways with their bassist (JP from Fever Dogs temporarily filled in for live shows) and in April 2015, Mike Drew left Amber Light Choices citing personal reasons.
In May 2015, Beer Le Roux (drums) and Piet Dempsey (bass guitar) both joined the band after a series of jam sessions.
Since their first show on 20 April 2014 at Rumours Lounge, the band has performed at venues all over Gauteng, including shows for Soweto Rock Revolution‘s Punk Fuck III, Emalyth Arts Expo VII (The Rapture), and Youth Fest 2015, support slots for Pablo Baptista (Mozambique) and The Curious Incident (UK), and shows with some of South Africa’s finest musicians, including, but certainly not limited to, Man As Machine, Francois Van Coke, The Black Cat Bones, Raptorbaby, Urban Vitamin, Fever Dogs, and The Ooh’s and The Aah’s.
Since its conception, the band has been taking every opportunity to write, rehearse and perform their music and have a laugh at somebody else’s expense.
The band released their demo Vox Populi in April 2015. It got play-listed on Tuks FM, Mix FM, and RockNet.co.za. The song has also been featured in
several compilations, namely Emalyth Art’s Expo 7: The Rapture; and Jagermeister’s Back the Artist 2015 Top 10.
The band has been booked for many prominent events in Gauteng, namely Plushy Fest 2015, Youth Fest 2015, Punk Fuck III, Emalyth Arts Expo 7: The Rapture, Rusty Riots, Bring Back the Rock 2014 and 2015, and Speedofest 2016.
They took part in two music-based competitions in 2015 with varying degrees of progress. The Battle 4 Rumours 2015 saw Amber Light Choices make it into the semi-finals and earned them an opening slot for Francois Van Coke. The 2015 Jagermeister Back the Artist challenge featured entries from well over 200 artists spanning many genres, but thanks to amazing public support, Amber Light Choices made it into the top 10.
The band wants to expand their fan-base in Johannesburg and Pretoria, and also wants to play in more parts of South Africa that they haven’t visited yet, and perhaps record an album in the near future. Getting more music out will be instrumental in opening up touring and festival performance opportunities for the band. Long live rock and roll!
